The biodiesel fuel industry has been driven by public demand for cleaner environment and sustainable energy resources, followed by national and international regulation, in particular the Kyoto protocol, as well as by the desire to reduce dependency on the unstable fossil oil market with its extreme price fluctuations.
Today most developed countries require car fuel to contain a certain percentage of biodiesel.
At present chemical catalysts are used in the production of biodiesel. These catalysts have significant environmental and operational drawbacks with substantial impact on cost-effectiveness.
Use of enzyme-based catalysts eliminates these drawbacks.
